Contracts and terms

Read a contract before you sign: fees, renewal and the way out, clause by clause.

Upload a service agreement, membership, subscription or terms of service. See what you pay, how it renews, what cancelling costs and which clauses to question, each quoted from the contract, plus questions to send before you sign.

What a decode looks like

Synthetic example. Every note points at the exact line it is about.

Sample home security service agreement · Northgate Secure (synthetic)
  1. 4. Term. This agreement runs for 36 months from installation.
  2. 5. Renewal. It then renews month to month unless you cancel in writing 30 days before the term ends.
  3. 9. Early cancellation. If you cancel before the term ends, you pay 75% of the remaining monthly charges.
  4. 11. Price changes. We may change the monthly charge once a year with 30 days' notice.

Why this is hard

  • The cost of leaving is buried

Cancellation fees, minimum terms and automatic renewal sit in clauses most people never reach before signing.

  • Small print changes the price

"We may change the monthly charge" or "fees apply" can matter more than the price on the first page.

  • A chat summary isn't the clause

A summary can sound right and still miss the sentence that decides what you owe. You need the clause itself.

What you get

  • What you pay, how often, and when it can change, each quoted from its clause
  • Term, renewal and cancellation, with the cost of leaving early worked out
  • Clauses worth questioning, such as automatic renewal, price changes or one-sided liability
  • Editable questions to send before you sign

What it is not

An explanation of your contract plus editable question templates. It doesn't say whether a clause is enforceable where you live, and it isn't legal or financial advice.

Questions

Which contracts work?

Consumer and small-business contracts and terms, as PDFs, photos or pasted text: service agreements, memberships, subscriptions, phone and internet contracts, freelance and supplier agreements, terms of service. Reading uses 10 points a page (20 for a photo) and the analysis 400 points; a contract never uses more than 8 credits.

Why not just ask ChatGPT?

You can, and it may summarize the main terms well. What we add is a fixed structure: the same summary for every contract, each point quoted from its clause so you can check it, the cost of leaving worked out, and questions ready to send. There's no prompt to write, and uploaded files are deleted within 24 hours unless you choose to save them. Whether that's worth about 5 credits is what we're asking before we build it.

Will it tell me if a clause is allowed?

No. Rules differ by state, province and country. It flags clauses that commonly deserve a question and quotes them, so you can ask the other party or a professional.
