What a decode looks like

Synthetic example. Every note points at the exact line it is about.

Sample tax notice · Northgate County Revenue Office (synthetic)
  1. Notice of proposed adjustment · Tax year 2025
  2. Our records show income not reported on your return: $1,240.00
  3. Proposed additional tax: $186.00 · Interest: $9.42
  4. If you agree, pay the amount due by November 14.
  5. If you disagree, send a written response with supporting documents by the same date.

Why this is hard

  • Formal wording, real deadlines

Letters about income tax, property tax, council tax or local charges use official language, and missing the date can add penalties.

  • English isn't your first language

A word-by-word translation doesn't explain what a "notice of assessment" or "balance due" means for you.

  • Hard to tell what needs action

Some letters only confirm something; others need a reply or a payment. The first line rarely says which.

What you get

  • What the letter says and who sent it, in plain English
  • The amount, the deadline and what the letter says happens if you miss it, quoted from the letter
  • Whether it asks you to pay, reply or simply keep it for your records
  • An editable reply template, and the explanation in another language if you need it

What it is not

An explanation of your letter plus editable templates. It isn't legal, tax or financial advice, and it doesn't cover immigration or visa letters.

Credit packs from $4.99 for 5 credits (plus applicable sales tax).

Questions

Which letters work?

Letters from tax agencies such as the IRS, the CRA or the ATO, and from councils, cities, counties and other local government. Immigration and visa letters are not included.

Can I get the explanation in my language?

Yes. At launch, adding another output language to a standard letter would cost 1 extra credit.

Why not just ask ChatGPT?

You can, and it will often give a reasonable summary. What we add is a fixed structure: who sent it, what it asks, the amount and the deadline, each quoted from the letter so you can check it, plus a reply template. There's no prompt to write, and uploaded files are deleted within 24 hours unless you choose to save them. Whether that's worth 1 credit is what we're asking before we build it.
